Winners of the XXII edition of the María Luisa Memorial Photo contests02/02/2012
The prize-winners for the World Mountains and Nature Photography Competition held annually from the Piloña town of Infiesto, Asturias are now known. On February 2nd, the date set in the competition rules to that effect, the jury set with the task of judging the twenty-second edition of the competition made public their decision, selecting from the 16,837 photographs presented by 1,590 competitors from 54 different countries those which were technically the boldest and visually the most impressive, obtaining a set of one hundred and two truly memorable photographs.
Ten major prizes and nine finalists were selected for each of the ten categories making up the competition. From among them stands out the work called "The Ladies of the Sea" by the Granada naturalist Francisco Mingorance, winner of the Biodiversity category in 2011 and in addition honoured with the absolute prize, the Golden Asturcon for Photography 2011, also the winner in the Plant World and Natural Landscapes categories. The other big winner of this edition is the German mountaineer and photographer Klaus Fengler, who with the works called "Patagonie-Poincenot" and “Climbing the cave" won the categories of Mountaineering and Climbing.

The remaining winners are: in the category Mountain Landscape, Christian Dr. Klepp; in Man on the Mountain, Samuel Bitton; in Animal World, Cristóbal Serrano; in Abstract photo, Manuel Subirats Roca, and in Woodland and its Ecosystem, Vittorio Ricci. The prize for new competitors (under 20 years old) goes to Schaul Marton.

Not all the initially selected photographs passed the phase comparing them with the original capture files (Raw) and had to be rejected by the jury as a consequence of not meeting the competition requirements. Various photographs were also rejected because, while being technically correct, they clearly digressed from the spirit of the competition by having been taken in the studio.

It is now possible to take a look at this highly particular collection of photographs through the Web www.memorialmarialuisa.com and on Facebook, and Video. Although the true moment to enjoy them will be in the audiovisual presentation which the organizers will show during the prize-giving which will take place in Oviedo on March 10th at 19:00, in the Cajastur Cultural Centre; entrance is open to all and free.
